Minus Kle is the solo project of Cologne-based musician Kay Lehmkuhl. Unlike his main band Alpentines, he chooses a reduced approach on the "Minus Kle" titled debut EP - hook-based, approachable. These songs also aim at adult pop, with strong RnB borrowings and tonally liberated moments. Musical reference points like Gorillaz, Frank Ocean or Sufjan Stevens show up in a measured way in the five tracks. Minus Kle celebrates the change of scenery, the unifying element of the songs is his love for melodic line and vocal colorations.
Supported by producer Boris Rogowski, Lehmkuhl embarks on a new quest as Minus Kle, researching his version of pop music without covering up the magic between the lines and melodies. The track Joni opens the EP as a reminder of the night Michael Jackson died and Lehmkuhl's daughter was born, The Difference addresses the back and forth in relationship worlds before Vanity Helps opens a level of self-reflection in which one's own shortcomings are illuminated. Minus Kle closes the song series with the dark AI-experimental E-Interlude and finally with Carpet Ball, a raw-left draft of a classic three-minute song - intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, outro.
